Introduction
In some patients, snoring symptoms may significantly worsen when lying supine, but markedly improve in terms of both intensity and severity when sleeping on their side. In healthy individuals, sleep position has little to no effect on snoring during sleep; however, in individuals with position-dependent snoring, snoring is markedly exacerbated in certain positions. Therefore, patients who snore are encouraged to maintain a lateral sleeping position whenever possible.

Many people snore while sleeping, which can be extremely disruptive to their sleeping partners, as snoring genuinely interferes with others’ sleep. So, what sleeping position helps prevent snoring?

Which Sleeping Position Helps Prevent Snoring?

For some individuals, snoring symptoms may significantly worsen when lying supine (on the back), whereas sleeping in the lateral (side-lying) position often markedly reduces both the intensity and frequency of snoring. In healthy individuals, sleep posture generally has little to no effect on snoring; however, for those whose snoring is posture-dependent—particularly those who snore predominantly while supine—adopting a side-sleeping position is strongly recommended. The causes of snoring are highly complex and involve multiple anatomical and systemic factors, including nasal, pharyngeal, and laryngeal abnormalities, as well as systemic conditions such as obesity and endocrine disorders.

Before bedtime, try to avoid eating puffed or highly processed snacks, as digestion of these foods produces excess gas, leading to bloating and disrupting normal sleep. Avoid spicy and salty foods—such as chili peppers, raw onions, and other pungent items—as they may trigger heartburn and indigestion, thereby impairing sleep quality. Excessive salt intake can cause vasoconstriction and elevate blood pressure, resulting in heightened tension and insomnia. Dinner should not be overly greasy or high in fat, as such meals increase hepatic workload and stimulate the central nervous system; instead, aim for light, modest portions.
