How Do Men Get Tested for HPV Infection?
The primary methods for detecting HPV infection in males include the acetic acid (vinegar) white test, secretion testing or blood testing, and HPV viral detection.
1. Acetic Acid (Vinegar) White Test: This test involves applying acetic acid to areas exhibiting clinical signs suggestive of HPV infection. After 2–5 minutes, whitening (acetowhiteness) of the treated skin indicates possible HPV infection; absence of any change largely rules out infection.
2. Secretion Testing or Blood Testing: If HPV infection is suspected, individuals may visit a hospital for secretion testing (e.g., urethral or penile swab) or blood testing. Diagnosis can be confirmed based on the test results.
3. HPV Viral Detection: First, exfoliated cells are collected from the affected area using a specialized sampling tool. HPV DNA is then detected via nucleic acid hybridization techniques. This method not only confirms HPV infection but also identifies whether the infecting strain is low-risk or high-risk. Note: Sexual intercourse and sitz baths must be avoided within 24 hours prior to this test.
