Can a torn hymen be repaired?
In most cases, a torn hymen can be surgically repaired. However, hymenoplasty is generally not recommended following full-term vaginal delivery or late-term induced abortion.
A hymenal tear may occur due to prior sexual intercourse or severe external trauma causing laceration of the genital area. When such a tear occurs, patients may seek improvement through hymenoplasty at a reputable medical facility. The optimal timing for surgery is typically around five days after complete cessation of menstruation. For a circular hymen located around the vaginal introitus, reconstruction can be performed using adjacent vaginal mucosal tissue. During the procedure, fresh incisions are made along the existing hymenal tear edges, followed by precise suturing—restoring the hymen to its original anatomical configuration.
Hymenoplasty is a minor surgical procedure that usually does not require hospitalization. It is brief in duration and generally does not interfere with daily activities, work, or menstrual function. However, patients should avoid strenuous physical activity or prolonged bicycle riding for a short period following surgery, as these activities may increase the risk of re-tearing.
