Introduction
Without treatment, conjunctivitis (“pink eye”) may lead to corneal lesions and decreased vision. Bacterial conjunctivitis can typically be effectively treated with appropriate antibiotics and usually does not result in severe complications. However, delayed treatment may lead to keratitis, corneal ulcers, or even vision loss. Viral conjunctivitis, when treated promptly, generally does not cause serious complications.

Red eye (conjunctivitis) is a well-known condition in daily life; many people encounter individuals with red eye, and most are aware that it is highly contagious. Once infected, prompt medical treatment is essential. So, what happens if red eye is left untreated?

  Consequences of Untreated Red Eye

If left untreated, red eye may lead to corneal complications and visual impairment. Bacterial conjunctivitis can typically be resolved with appropriate antibiotic therapy and usually does not result in severe complications. However, delayed treatment may progress to keratitis, corneal ulcers, or even vision loss. Viral conjunctivitis, when treated promptly, generally does not cause serious complications. Yet, if treatment is delayed, it may also lead to keratitis, corneal opacities, and decreased vision. Patients are strongly advised to seek timely medical evaluation and treatment to prevent severe outcomes.

Red eye is primarily caused by viruses or bacteria and is highly contagious—especially adenovirus infections, which may trigger outbreaks. Its main clinical manifestations include ocular hyperemia (redness), excessive tearing, and ocular discharge. In cases complicated by bacterial infection, copious purulent, yellow-green discharge may occur. A small number of patients may present with preauricular lymphadenopathy. The primary mode of transmission is direct contact; therefore, avoiding eye rubbing at all times and practicing thorough hand hygiene are critically important.

In daily life, it is recommended to drink plenty of water, consume ample vegetables and fruits, maintain regular bowel movements, and ensure adequate rest. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
