Can trauma cause astigmatism?
Many people are aware that myopia significantly impairs vision; however, astigmatism is also highly detrimental. Not only does it cause blurred vision and considerable discomfort for patients, but it also has numerous underlying causes. So, can trauma induce astigmatism?
Can Trauma Cause Astigmatism?
Ocular trauma can indeed lead to astigmatism, primarily for the following two reasons: First, when an eye injury results in a corneal stromal scar, localized changes in corneal refractive power occur, causing variations in refractive power across different meridians of the cornea. Consequently, light rays refracted through the cornea fail to converge at a single focal point inside the eye; instead, they form a focal line—resulting in astigmatism. Second, if trauma damages the crystalline lens within the eye, it may cause uneven lens opacification. The thickened, opaque regions alter the lens’s overall refractive index, leading to irregular refraction and induced astigmatism.

Adopting healthy ocular habits is the most effective way to prevent astigmatism. First, maintain proper posture: while working or studying, adopt a correct and comfortable sitting position, and position your computer screen or book at approximately chest level. Keep your eyes 40–50 cm away from the screen or reading material, and use an adjustable-height chair whenever possible. Second, balance work with rest: consciously blink frequently during visual tasks, or close your eyes periodically for brief rest intervals. Avoid prolonged near-vision activities—limit continuous close-up work to no more than one hour. Instead, take breaks outdoors to engage in physical activity—such as performing eye exercises, gazing into the distance, or taking a walk. Finally, practice good ocular hygiene: cultivate sound hygiene habits—refrain from touching your eyes with your hands or other objects to minimize the risk of ocular infection.

If astigmatism is mild, corrective eyeglasses may suffice. For severe cases, treatment must be tailored to the underlying cause. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
