Why did my hives flare up after taking the traditional Chinese medicine?
The appearance of widespread hives after taking traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) may be due to: 1) inappropriate prescription (i.e., the herbal formula does not match the patient’s specific pattern of disharmony); 2) disease progression or worsening; or 3) noncompliance with prescribed medication instructions.
1) Inappropriate prescription: If a TCM formula is mismatched to the patient’s condition and triggers a severe flare-up of hives, discontinue the medication immediately to prevent further adverse reactions. Then consult your physician promptly to reassess and adjust the prescription accordingly.
2) Disease progression/worsening: When the prescribed dosage is insufficient, hives may erupt extensively. In such cases, contact your physician without delay; dose adjustment or modification of the treatment regimen may be necessary.
3) Noncompliance with medication instructions: Failure to take the medication as prescribed—such as missing doses—or concurrent use of other medications (including over-the-counter drugs or supplements) may provoke a generalized outbreak of hives. Temporarily suspend all medications and consult your physician to reevaluate and reestablish an appropriate dosing regimen.
During treatment, strictly adhere to your physician’s instructions regarding medication use. Do not alter the dosage or frequency on your own, as this may lead to adverse effects.
