Introduction
Normal sexual activity is a physiological behavior and does not affect menstruation. However, engaging in sexual intercourse during menstruation may disrupt the menstrual cycle—for example, causing menstrual irregularities or prolonged menstrual bleeding—and may allow pathogenic bacteria to invade, potentially leading to endometritis or pelvic inflammatory disease. Additionally, retrograde flow of menstrual blood may contribute to endometriosis. Generally speaking, regular, healthy sexual activity can help regulate endocrine balance and promote a normal menstrual cycle.

In daily life, pursuing sexual satisfaction may inadvertently harm women’s health. So, can sexual activity affect menstruation?

Can sexual activity affect menstruation?

Normal sexual activity is a physiological behavior and does not affect menstruation. However, engaging in intercourse during menstruation can disrupt the menstrual cycle—for example, causing menstrual irregularities, prolonged menstrual bleeding, or even pathogenic bacterial invasion leading to endometritis or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Retrograde flow of menstrual blood may also contribute to endometriosis. Generally speaking, healthy, regular sexual activity helps maintain endocrine balance and supports a regular menstrual cycle. Conversely, excessively frequent intercourse may deplete kidney qi (a concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine referring to vital energy), resulting in menstrual disturbances. Another contributing factor is unhygienic sexual practices, which can cause pelvic inflammation and subsequent menstrual irregularities. Both of these unhealthy sexual behaviors can adversely affect the menstrual cycle.

Other causes of menstrual irregularities include: 1. High work-related stress or chronic emotional suppression—consider changing jobs if applicable. 2. Wearing insufficient clothing during winter, leading to abdominal coldness and uterine vasoconstriction, which may trigger menstrual disturbances. 3. Excessive obesity, which can also contribute to menstrual irregularities.

Intercourse is strictly contraindicated during menstruation. Sexual activity outside of the menstrual period does not affect menstruation. Nevertheless, to prevent infection by pathogens, it is advisable to practice good sexual hygiene—including thorough cleaning before and after intercourse. I hope this article has been helpful to you.
