Introduction
Hypotension refers to blood pressure values below the normal range. Typically, normal blood pressure is defined as a systolic pressure between 100–139 mmHg and a diastolic pressure between 60–89 mmHg. Hypotension is diagnosed when the systolic pressure falls below 90 mmHg or the diastolic pressure falls below 60 mmHg. Either value falling below the normal range qualifies as hypotension.

Hypotension—often caused by constitutional weakness, malnutrition, and other factors—can cause significant discomfort and even impair daily life. But at what point is blood pressure considered “low”?

What Blood Pressure Values Constitute Hypotension?

Hypotension refers to blood pressure readings below the normal range. Typically, normal blood pressure is defined as a systolic pressure between 100–139 mmHg and a diastolic pressure between 60–89 mmHg. Hypotension is diagnosed when systolic pressure falls below 90 mmHg or diastolic pressure falls below 60 mmHg. Either value falling below these thresholds qualifies as hypotension. It may result from various underlying causes—including cardiac insufficiency, anemia, or reduced intravascular volume—and can lead to inadequate peripheral perfusion. Therefore, appropriate preventive measures are essential.

A systolic pressure below 90 mmHg and/or a diastolic pressure below 60 mmHg is classified as hypotension. When hypotension occurs, identifying its underlying cause is crucial. It is most commonly observed in young women—a pattern often linked to individual constitutional factors. In many cases, symptoms can be improved through proper nutrition and regular physical exercise. Incorporating nutrient-rich foods such as vegetables, lean meats, and eggs into the diet is recommended. However, certain cases stem from specific medical conditions—particularly chronic debilitating diseases, malignancies, or tuberculosis.

Individuals with hypotension should take note of the following: First, when sleeping, slightly elevating the head with an extra pillow may help alleviate symptoms. We hope this article has been helpful!
