Introduction
Freckles result from increased melanin production triggered by sun exposure, and heredity is another major contributing factor, leading to their appearance on the face. Excessive skin exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet (UV) radiation promotes the development and intensification of freckles. Since freckle formation is closely associated with sun exposure, they are especially common in summer. Freckles are small, light brown to brown pigmented spots commonly found on the face.

Freckles are a common skin concern affecting many adolescents. Since they typically appear on both cheeks, they can impair facial aesthetics. In some cases, freckles even develop during early childhood. In daily life, females are more prone to developing freckles than males. So, what causes freckles?

What Causes Freckles?

Freckles result from increased melanin production triggered by sun exposure—and genetics is another major contributing factor. Excessive exposure of the skin to sunlight or ultraviolet (UV) radiation promotes the development and intensification of freckles. Because freckle formation is closely linked to sun exposure, they are especially prevalent in summer. Freckles are small, light- to dark-brown pigmented spots commonly found on the face—particularly on the forehead, nose, and cheeks—and occasionally on the backs of the hands, neck, and shoulders. Freckling is an autosomal dominant inherited condition; thus, the same freckling pattern may recur across multiple generations within a single family.

To prevent freckles, avoid excessive sun exposure—especially during summer. When outdoors, wear protective clothing or apply broad-spectrum sunscreen. Consume plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins C and E, and maintain a positive, relaxed mental state—avoiding anxiety and depression.

If you develop freckles on your face, do not self-medicate. If treatment is necessary, consult a physician for appropriate, supervised therapy. We hope this information has been helpful!
