Emphysema is not contagious. It is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by abnormal, irreversible overinflation of the airspaces distal to the terminal bronchioles, resulting from destruction of alveolar walls. Obstructive emphysema—caused by airway obstruction—is the most common type. Common underlying causes of airway obstruction include chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, bronchiectasis, and advanced pulmonary tuberculosis. Assessing the severity of emphysema is challenging, as it depends on individual constitution and the extent of disease progression, which varies significantly among patients. Nevertheless, emphysema remains a serious condition, potentially leading to complications such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), respiratory failure, and systemic hypoxia-induced damage to other organs.
Several treatment options are available for emphysema. As a common chronic inflammatory disorder of the respiratory system, emphysema results from damage to airway walls due to excessive dilation and overinflation of bronchioles, triggered by multiple etiologies. It is non-infectious and cannot be transmitted to others. In early stages, patients may experience recurrent coughing; in advanced cases, symptoms such as dyspnea, chest tightness, and chest pain may develop. Emphysema is difficult to cure completely. Without timely intervention, it may readily lead to various complications, causing substantial harm to the patient’s overall health.
