How to Prevent the Transmission of Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis (TB) is a relatively common disease. It is widely known to be contagious, and once contracted, it can significantly disrupt the patient’s normal daily life and work. Therefore, preventive measures must be taken in everyday life. So, how can we prevent the transmission of pulmonary tuberculosis?
How to Prevent Pulmonary Tuberculosis Transmission
Tuberculosis is primarily a respiratory infectious disease caused by infection with *Mycobacterium tuberculosis*. Its main mode of transmission involves inhalation of airborne droplets expelled by infected individuals through coughing, sneezing, or speaking. To prevent TB infection, individuals should wear masks appropriately, wash hands frequently, ensure adequate indoor ventilation to maintain fresh air circulation, avoid crowded public places, and minimize high-risk close contact—especially intimate contact such as kissing or sharing meals. Individuals experiencing persistent cough and sputum production for more than two weeks should seek medical evaluation promptly, as these symptoms may indicate possible TB infection. Diagnostic tests—including the tuberculin skin test (PPD), chest X-ray or CT scan of both lungs, and sputum acid-fast bacilli (AFB) smear and culture—may be required to confirm diagnosis. During this period and following diagnosis, strict isolation from healthy individuals is essential.

Preventing TB infection mainly involves avoiding contact with infected individuals—particularly in crowded or poorly ventilated environments—and receiving the Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine where appropriate. TB may develop due to *M. tuberculosis* infection or compromised host immunity. Early symptoms may include cough, sputum production, chest tightness, chest pain, and even high fever. Anti-tuberculosis medications can effectively alleviate these symptoms. During treatment, personal protective measures are crucial; personal utensils and drinking vessels must be regularly disinfected.

Patients are advised to maintain healthy lifestyle habits and follow a balanced diet, avoiding spicy and irritating foods. We hope this information proves helpful.
