Introduction
For patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, consuming fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins is beneficial for their condition; therefore, physicians often recommend increasing intake of fruits and vegetables. There are no specific fruit restrictions. Commonly available fruits in daily life are all suitable for consumption, especially oranges, snow pears, ya pears, figs, grapes, strawberries, and apples.

Pulmonary tuberculosis often presents with prominent coughing, which can indeed cause discomfort to patients and prompt a desire for rapid recovery. In addition to medication, dietary adjustments—such as increased fruit intake—can support treatment. So, which fruits should pulmonary tuberculosis patients avoid?

Fruits to Avoid in Pulmonary Tuberculosis

For patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, consuming fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins benefits their condition; thus, physicians commonly recommend ample intake of fruits and vegetables. There are generally no strict fruit-related dietary restrictions. Most common fruits—including oranges, snow pears, Ya pears (a type of Asian pear), figs, grapes, strawberries, apples, bananas, watermelons, and dragon fruit—are suitable and particularly beneficial for pulmonary tuberculosis patients. However, certain “heat-inducing” fruits—such as longan, lychee, cherries, hawthorn, and mango—may exacerbate yin deficiency and internal heat (“fire excess”) in these patients, potentially worsening the disease; therefore, consumption of these fruits should be minimized.

Tuberculosis patients may also accelerate recovery through dietary optimization, adhering to principles of high-protein, high-calorie, and high-vitamin intake while ensuring adequate supplementation of trace elements. Suitable foods include various grains—such as foxtail millet, rice, oats, coix seed (Job’s tears), and glutinous rice—as well as protein-rich meats like rabbit, beef, chicken, fish, shrimp, and pork leg meat.

Patients are advised to maintain healthy lifestyle habits, follow a balanced diet, and avoid spicy or irritating foods. We hope this information proves helpful.
