Hyperemesis gravidarum (severe nausea and vomiting in pregnancy) is caused by elevated levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in women more than 40 days pregnant. Nausea during pregnancy can be relieved by taking vitamin B6 and other B-complex vitamins. The underlying cause of pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting is the rise in human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels, which typically begins around 40 days after conception. This hormone inhibits intestinal motility and reduces gastrointestinal peristalsis. As a result, gastric contents cannot pass efficiently into the intestines and remain in the stomach, leading easily to symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. Around week 10 of pregnancy, hCG levels gradually decline, and consequently, nausea and vomiting tend to subside progressively.

Various symptoms—including nausea and vomiting—are common and normal early-pregnancy reactions. However, due to individual differences in physical condition, the timing and duration of these symptoms vary among women: some experience them only in early pregnancy, others only in late pregnancy, and some throughout the entire gestational period. Additionally, hypertension and elevated blood glucose levels in late pregnancy may also cause dizziness and nausea; therefore, close monitoring is essential.
