Introduction
Patients with hypoglycemia may develop hypotension during prolonged fasting. Concurrently, inadequate effective circulating blood volume can also lead to hypotension. These two conditions may coexist but are not causally related. In other words, hypotension is not caused by hypoglycemia; rather, it results from other underlying diseases or physiological factors. Some patients with hypoglycemia may experience tachycardia or panic during an episode.

Low blood pressure (hypotension) is less common in clinical practice than hypertension, yet its health risks are no less serious. Over the years, clinicians have increasingly identified cases of hypotension, indicating that it is threatening the health of an ever-growing number of individuals. So, does low blood sugar cause low blood pressure?

Does low blood sugar cause low blood pressure?

In patients with hypoglycemia, prolonged fasting may lead to hypotension. Additionally, inadequate effective circulating blood volume can also result in hypotension. While both conditions may coexist, neither directly causes the other. In other words, hypotension is not caused by hypoglycemia but rather stems from other underlying diseases or physiological factors. Some hypoglycemic patients may experience tachycardia or anxiety during an episode, which can trigger a reflexive rise in blood pressure. Consequently, blood pressure may not significantly decrease during hypoglycemia.

Physiological hypotension refers to blood pressure levels meeting the diagnostic criteria for hypotension in otherwise healthy individuals who exhibit no symptoms. Pathological hypotension—such as that resulting from massive hemorrhage, acute myocardial infarction, or septic or anaphylactic shock—can cause a marked drop in blood pressure. When both hypotension and hypoglycemia occur concurrently, it is essential to identify the underlying cause and treat symptoms accordingly.

Patients are advised to maintain a light, balanced diet and engage in regular physical exercise to improve overall physical fitness. We hope this information proves helpful.
