How is first-degree cervical erosion treated?
Recently, I have frequently experienced lower abdominal pain and visited the hospital for a gynecological examination, which revealed cervical ectropion (formerly termed “cervical erosion”). How is grade I cervical ectropion treated?
How is Grade I Cervical Ectropion Treated?
Cervical ectropion is a chronic inflammatory condition resulting from prolonged irritation of the cervix and is considered a manifestation of chronic cervicitis. If no abnormal clinical symptoms are present, treatment is generally unnecessary. Mild cervicitis—often caused by physiological ectropion of the cervical columnar epithelium—is typically a benign, physiological phenomenon. However, if cervical ectropion is accompanied by symptoms such as increased vaginal discharge, foul-smelling discharge, lower abdominal pain, or low back discomfort, cervical secretions should be collected for testing to determine whether human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is present. In cases where HPV infection is ruled out, treatment may include vaginal administration of medications under medical supervision, or physical modalities such as electrocautery, cryotherapy, or laser therapy.

For mild cervical ectropion, vaginal suppositories such as polyphenol sulfonate vaginal suppositories, Xiaomi suppositories, or compound Ezhu suppositories may be used. These should be inserted deeply into the posterior vaginal fornix. Treatment should begin immediately after menstruation ends and continue for three consecutive weeks as one course. A follow-up examination should be scheduled after the next menstrual period to assess cervical healing and determine whether further treatment is required.

During treatment for cervical ectropion, sexual intercourse must be avoided to prevent cross-infection. Additionally, meticulous external genital hygiene should be maintained, and regular follow-up visits to the hospital are essential. Once fully recovered, normal sexual activity may resume.
