Differences Between Gastritis and Gastric Ulcers
The primary distinction between gastritis and gastric ulcers lies in the degree of gastric mucosal damage. During gastritis, the gastric mucosa sustains varying degrees of injury; however, normal gastric mucosa can still be observed under gastroscopy. So, what exactly differentiates gastritis from gastric ulcers?
Differences Between Gastritis and Gastric Ulcers
Gastric ulcers are generally more severe than gastritis. Patients with gastric ulcers commonly experience upper abdominal pain closely related to meals—typically occurring about 1–2 hours after eating—and the pain is usually more intense than that associated with gastritis. Symptoms of gastric ulcers may recur, particularly during seasonal transitions. In contrast, endoscopic findings in gastritis differ markedly: gastritis typically presents with mucosal hyperemia (redness) and edema (swelling), whereas gastric ulcers reveal clear, localized mucosal defects. These ulcerated areas—commonly located in the antrum or body of the stomach—vary in size and often exhibit a white, fibrinous exudate covering the base. Surrounding mucosa appears hyperemic and edematous.

During active gastric ulceration, normal gastric mucosal tissue is typically absent within the ulcer bed, reflecting relatively severe mucosal damage. If gastritis remains untreated, it may progress to gastric ulceration. Moreover, numerous subtypes of gastritis exist. Patients are advised to seek care at a reputable hospital first; following gastroscopic and other diagnostic evaluations, treatment should be tailored according to the physician’s recommendations.

Treatment for gastric ulcers focuses on promoting ulcer healing—for example, using proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) under medical supervision. In contrast, gastritis management primarily involves symptomatic treatment, dietary self-care, and adequate rest.
