Introduction
Normal vaginal discharge is white, thin or clear and egg-white-like in consistency, viscous, and odorless. If the discharge is yellow and has an unpleasant odor, it may indicate trichomoniasis vaginitis. Trichomoniasis vaginitis is a vaginal infection caused by *Trichomonas vaginalis*, resulting in grayish-yellow or yellowish-white, frothy discharge accompanied by a foul odor; it is often associated with inadequate personal hygiene.

Normal vaginal discharge is typically thin and white, though it may occasionally appear slightly cloudy. It is sticky but not thick, odorless, and maintains a consistent color. If abnormal vaginal discharge is observed, medical consultation is recommended. What causes yellow vaginal discharge with an unpleasant odor?

What Causes Yellow Vaginal Discharge with an Odor?

Normal vaginal discharge is white, thin or transparent (resembling egg-white), viscous, and odorless. Yellow discharge with an unpleasant odor may indicate trichomoniasis—a vaginal infection caused by the protozoan *Trichomonas vaginalis*. This condition often results in frothy, grayish-yellow or yellowish-white discharge accompanied by a foul odor.

Yellow or yellow-brown, thick, foul-smelling discharge may result from poor personal hygiene, frequent use of vaginal douches, bacterial infection, or disruption of the normal vaginal flora. Such conditions can predispose individuals to gonococcal vaginitis, acute cervicitis, or chronic cervicitis. Additionally, concurrent infections associated with vaginal or cervical cancer—or retained foreign bodies in the vagina—may lead to pyometra (pus accumulation in the uterine cavity).

Two to three days after ovulation, vaginal discharge may become cloudy and viscous, with reduced volume. Before and after menstruation, pelvic congestion and increased vaginal mucosal exudation cause an increase in discharge volume—but without odor. Maintaining good personal hygiene is usually sufficient under these circumstances. We hope this article has been helpful to you!
