Introduction
Tonsil stones can be diagnosed based on symptoms, physical examination, and X-ray imaging. Small tonsil stones may be asymptomatic. However, if the stones grow large enough to protrude from the surface of the tonsils, patients may experience a persistent, localized foreign-body sensation in the pharynx. If the stones are accompanied by local infection, they may cause sore throat.

With societal advancement, an increasing number of diseases have been found to persistently affect daily life. Tonsil stones are one such condition. Many patients are unaware of what tonsil stones are, what they look like, or what symptoms they cause—so how can one identify tonsil stones?

How to Identify Tonsil Stones

Tonsil stones can be diagnosed based on symptoms, physical examination, and X-ray imaging. If the stones are very small, they may produce no noticeable symptoms. However, once they grow large enough to protrude from the surface of the tonsils, patients may experience a persistent sensation of a foreign body in the throat—particularly in the pharynx. If secondary local infection occurs, patients may develop sore throat, mimicking clinical manifestations of tonsillitis.

Oral pharyngeal examination plays a critical role in diagnosing tonsil stones: grayish-white, granular, relatively hard material can be observed within the tonsillar crypts and can be removed using a cotton swab or fine forceps. Minor local bleeding may occur during removal. The stones often emit a foul odor, which may lead patients to notice halitosis (bad breath). Larger tonsil stones embedded deeply within the tonsillar crypts may be visualized via radiographic imaging.

Patients already diagnosed with tonsil stones should pay special attention to their daily habits—particularly diet, which should remain light and bland. Additionally, they should consume foods high in water content and easily digestible. Only through such measures can discomfort associated with tonsillar inflammation be effectively alleviated. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
