Introduction
Patients with tonsillitis should avoid eating durian. Durian is considered a “heat-inducing” food in traditional Chinese medicine; excessive consumption can easily cause “internal heat” (a condition associated with inflammation and discomfort). Since tonsillitis is often triggered by factors such as internal heat, consuming durian may exacerbate this condition and hinder recovery. Additionally, durian has a strong, pungent odor.

In cases of routine tonsillitis, in addition to drinking plenty of water, dietary adjustments are also important. So, can one eat durian during a bout of tonsillitis?

Can durian be consumed during tonsillitis?

Durian should be avoided during tonsillitis. It is considered a “heat-inducing” food in traditional Chinese medicine; excessive consumption may easily cause “internal heat” (a concept referring to inflammatory or hyperactive physiological states). Since tonsillitis is often triggered by internal heat and other related factors, eating durian may exacerbate this condition and impede recovery. Moreover, durian has a strong, pungent odor and is classified as a spicy food. Some patients may experience localized pharyngeal congestion after consuming such foods, which hinders disease resolution. Additionally, certain individuals may be allergic to components in durian, potentially triggering allergic reactions—including localized edema of the pharynx and tonsils—further delaying recovery. Patients are advised to consume mild, easily digestible foods such as congee, noodles, chicken cakes, and fruits like snow pears, grapefruits, and kiwifruits.

For patients with acute tonsillitis, it is essential to avoid spicy foods, ensure adequate rest, and maintain high fluid intake. Supportive care should be provided to promote rapid recovery. Under medical supervision, anti-inflammatory therapy and oral antibiotics can effectively alleviate symptoms. Gargling with warm saline solution or commercially available antiseptic mouthwashes can also significantly reduce local pain and discomfort.

Furthermore, engaging in regular outdoor physical activity and strengthening overall fitness helps enhance immunity and resistance to illness. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
