Introduction
People with diabetes should avoid drinking water chestnut (Chinese water chestnut) beverages. Regardless of the type, most beverages are high in sugar or calories, and such high-sugar, high-calorie drinks are detrimental to blood glucose control. In particular, milk tea and coffee-based beverages tend to be very high in calories. Long-term, excessive consumption of milk tea can cause blood glucose fluctuations and elevated blood sugar levels—making it unsuitable for individuals with diabetes. People with diabetes may drink water freely; plain boiled water is unrestricted, and moderate amounts of tea are also acceptable.

Water chestnuts have a sweet taste and are a popular seasonal fruit enjoyed by many for cooling the body during hot weather. Can people with diabetes drink “Matui Shuang” (a water-chestnut-based beverage)?

Can people with diabetes drink “Matui Shuang”?

People with diabetes should avoid drinking “Matui Shuang.” Virtually all commercial beverages contain significant amounts of sugar or calories, both of which adversely affect blood glucose control. In particular, milk teas and flavored coffee drinks are extremely high in calories. Regular, excessive consumption of milk tea can cause blood glucose fluctuations and sustained hyperglycemia—making it unsuitable for individuals with diabetes. People with diabetes are encouraged to drink plenty of water. Plain boiled water is unrestricted, and moderate intake of unsweetened tea may also support improved glucose metabolism. In addition to limiting sugar and caloric intake from beverages, overall dietary calorie intake must also be controlled. A low-calorie diet emphasizing low-glycemic-index foods is recommended.

Beverages suitable for people with diabetes include green tea, black tea, Pu’er tea, and bitter tea (Ilex kudingcha). Additionally, black coffee (unsweetened and without creamers) is acceptable. Carbonated beverages and other drinks containing substantial added sugars or artificial additives should be avoided, as they may contribute to excessive caloric intake and weight gain. Milk tea is also not recommended due to certain ingredients that are detrimental to individuals with diabetes.

People with diabetes may consume plain (unsweetened) milk, which provides high-quality protein and calcium. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health and happiness!
