Introduction
Individuals with tonsillitis should avoid eating parched rice, as it depletes Yin and promotes internal heat, potentially worsening the condition. Although parched rice has an appealing aroma, it is inherently drying and heat-inducing—thus contraindicated not only for those with cold-damp diarrhea but especially for patients with tonsillitis. Additionally, individuals with tonsillitis should avoid consuming dog meat, mutton, chicken, goose meat, and quail meat. Although these meats are warming in nature, sore throat and tonsillar swelling are typically caused by excess heat and pathogenic fire.

Tonsillitis may occur due to a relatively weakened immune system, making one more susceptible to bacterial or viral infections. So, what foods should be avoided during tonsillitis?

Foods to Avoid During Tonsillitis

Fried rice should be avoided during tonsillitis. According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), fried rice depletes yin and promotes internal heat, potentially worsening tonsillitis. Although it smells appetizing, its nature is drying and heat-inducing—thus unsuitable not only for those with cold-damp diarrhea but especially for individuals suffering from throat inflammation. Additionally, dog meat, lamb, chicken, goose, and quail should also be avoided. Though these meats are considered “warming” in TCM, sore throat and tonsillar swelling typically reflect excess internal heat and pathogenic fire. Consuming such foods may further exacerbate heat, trigger fever, increase phlegm production, and aggravate the condition.

Oranges are considered a cooling fruit in TCM, yet their sweet-sour taste can provoke internal heat when consumed excessively. Overeating oranges may lead to worsening symptoms—including dryness and irritation of the throat, tongue swelling, and oral ulcers. Therefore, it is advisable to temporarily avoid oranges during active tonsillitis. Oranges are among the fruits contraindicated in tonsillitis precisely because excessive intake may generate internal heat.

Other foods to avoid include longan aril, leeks, chili peppers, black pepper, amomum seed, cassia bark, eggplant, ginseng, and other warming or pungent ingredients. Tonsillitis is fundamentally associated with excessive internal heat (“fire”) in TCM. Fried foods contain high levels of saturated fat, which the body struggles to metabolize efficiently. Over time, these fats accumulate and may transform into endogenous toxins that gradually impair overall health. Especially during acute tonsillitis, fried foods should be strictly avoided.
