Introduction
Appendicitis can be treated through various approaches, including traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western medicine. Treatment selection for patients with appendicitis depends on the specific clinical presentation. For heat-toxin-type appendicitis, medications such as Lianqiao Baidu Wan (Forsythia Detoxifying Pills) and Pugongying Pian (Dandelion Tablets) may be used. For cold-pattern (yin-pattern) appendicitis, combination therapy with Dingkui San (a TCM formula) and Lanyan Yan Pian (Appendicitis Tablets) is commonly employed. Currently, many patients seeking conservative management of appendicitis opt for Western medical treatment.

Appendicitis is a common condition. It may occur when bacteria infect the lumen of the appendix or when the appendix becomes obstructed—such as due to chronic constipation, diarrhea, or spasm of the appendiceal muscles and blood vessels. Prompt medical treatment following onset is essential.

Treatment of Appendicitis

Appendicitis can be treated using either traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) or Western medicine approaches, depending on the patient’s specific condition. For heat-toxin-type appendicitis, medications such as Lianqiao Baidu Wan (Forsythia Detoxifying Pills) or Pu Gong Ying Pian (Dandelion Tablets) may be prescribed. For cold-deficiency-type (yin-pattern) appendicitis, combination therapy with Dingkun San (a TCM formula) and Lanweiyankang Pian (Appendicitis Tablets) may be used. Currently, many patients seeking conservative management opt for Western medical treatment. Antibiotics are the mainstay of Western pharmacotherapy; under physician supervision, erythromycin, penicillin, and other antibiotics may be administered with good efficacy. If an abscess has formed, antibiotic therapy should be initiated first to resolve the abscess.

Common symptoms of appendicitis include abdominal pain. Abdominal pain is the hallmark symptom and the primary reason most patients seek medical care. Initially, the pain typically manifests in the upper abdomen; later, it migrates to the lower right abdomen and periumbilical region. Once appendicitis-related abdominal pain begins, it tends to recur. Patients must prioritize rest, as overexertion may exacerbate the pain.

Patients are advised to eat small, frequent meals; avoid alcohol; and refrain from consuming cold or otherwise irritating foods. We hope this information proves helpful.
