How long can a person live with end-stage liver cirrhosis?
Regular alcohol consumption may trigger alcoholic cirrhosis. In patients with pre-existing liver disease, cirrhosis may develop following a severe illness. Cirrhosis is an irreversible liver condition; as the disease progresses to its advanced stage, symptoms worsen significantly and various complications may arise. So, how long can a person live with end-stage cirrhosis?
How long can a person survive with end-stage cirrhosis?
Survival time for individuals with end-stage cirrhosis ranges from one day to ten years. First, the most common symptom in end-stage cirrhosis is bleeding—particularly hematemesis (vomiting blood), resulting from upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Uncontrolled bleeding can lead to death and may persist for extended periods. In addition to severe hemorrhage, hepatic encephalopathy is another frequent cause of death in cirrhosis. Hepatic encephalopathy occurs when liver function has deteriorated to its utmost degree, resulting in complete loss of the liver’s detoxification capacity; accumulated toxins then impair the central nervous system, leading to hepatic encephalopathy and coma—conditions that are often irreversible. Hepatorenal syndrome develops in the late stages of cirrhosis: when liver function is severely compromised, kidney function is adversely affected, manifesting as oliguria and other signs of renal failure.

End-stage cirrhosis is a chronic, progressive, and diffuse liver disease caused by multiple etiological factors acting on the liver, ultimately progressing to the cirrhotic stage. The most common causes include viral infections—particularly hepatitis B and C viruses—as well as alcohol abuse, drug-induced injury, and less common factors such as cardiovascular disorders, genetic or metabolic conditions, and immune-mediated diseases. In some cases, the underlying cause remains unknown.

Patients are advised to maintain a light, easily digestible diet and seek prompt medical attention upon noticing any symptoms. We hope this information proves helpful.
