What Causes Gingival Enlargement?
Gingival inflammation at the root of a tooth can cause redness, swelling, or severe pain in the gums. There are numerous causes of gingival swelling and pain. For example, poor oral hygiene may lead to gum swelling and discomfort. Additionally, certain pathological conditions—such as diseases affecting the tissues surrounding the teeth, or other infections and inflammatory processes—can also contribute. So, what causes gingival enlargement?
Causes of Gingival Enlargement
The primary causes of gingival swelling include dental caries, pulpitis, and odontogenic lesions. First, untreated dental caries—where tooth structure is eroded and not promptly cleaned—can result in localized gingival swelling and pain. Food impaction may also trigger such issues. Once pulpitis develops, patients often experience tooth swelling or pain, which may radiate to the surrounding gingiva, causing redness and swelling. Pericoronitis around impacted wisdom teeth can induce localized tissue inflammation and swelling; when the wisdom tooth fails to erupt properly, food impaction and bacterial infection may occur, requiring targeted treatment for effective symptom relief. For cases involving gingival swelling and pain or pulpitis, appropriate dental intervention is essential to effectively alleviate discomfort.

Gingival pruritus (itching) has multiple potential causes, most commonly stemming from local oral factors—such as gingivitis. As inflammation progresses, patients may develop pain upon biting, and symptoms tend to recur. If food impaction is not promptly removed, it may exacerbate the condition. Treatment options may include cast metal crowns or porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. Meanwhile, various oral bacteria proliferate, contributing to gingivitis and gingival bleeding; patients often report halitosis (bad breath). Furthermore, other gingival disorders—such as gingival tumors—may cause bleeding due to abnormally rich vascularity, or tumor rupture resulting from friction during mastication.

Patients are advised to consume warm, mild foods, increase intake of vegetables and fruits, and avoid spicy, fried, grilled, excessively cold, or excessively hot foods. We hope this information proves helpful.
