Introduction
Asthma is generally not fatal; however, severe complications such as respiratory failure may lead to death. According to a report released by the China Asthma Alliance, China has up to 30 million asthma patients, with a population-based prevalence rate of as high as 1.24%. Asthma causes breathing difficulties, and medications can alleviate these symptoms; however, asthma poses additional health risks beyond dyspnea.

To understand a disease, the most important step is to identify its underlying causes—only by pinpointing the specific etiology can prevention and treatment be truly targeted and effective. For example, asthma has a high prevalence in daily life; therefore, identifying its root causes is essential before initiating appropriate treatment. So, can asthma be fatal?

  Can asthma be fatal?

Asthma itself is generally not fatal. However, severe complications—such as respiratory failure—can potentially lead to death. According to a report released by the China Asthma Alliance, China has over 30 million asthma patients, with an overall population prevalence of up to 1.24%. Asthma causes breathing difficulties, which medications can effectively alleviate. Yet asthma poses additional health risks beyond dyspnea. During an asthma attack, the airways narrow, impeding the expulsion of carbon dioxide and causing it to accumulate in the lungs.

Asthma is closely associated with compromised immune function; thus, strengthening physical constitution is crucial. Regular exercise helps improve adaptability to seasonal changes. Additionally, patients should maintain a balanced routine—ensuring adequate, high-quality sleep—to reduce the frequency of asthma exacerbations. Indoor spaces should be well-ventilated regularly to expel stale air and allow fresh air to circulate. Bedding should be washed and sun-dried frequently, while carpets and upholstered furniture (e.g., sofas) should be vacuumed regularly. Patients are also advised to enhance their nutritional intake, consuming ample protein, vitamins, and trace elements.

In daily life, cultivating healthy lifestyle and dietary habits is essential. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
