Introduction
Patients with Yang deficiency are generally not advised to take Liu Wei Di Huang Wan. This is because Liu Wei Di Huang Wan primarily nourishes Yin and is a classic Yin-nourishing formula—commonly referred to as “three tonifying and three draining” ingredients. It helps regulate the Liver, Spleen, and Kidneys, especially excelling in nourishing Kidney Yin. Liu Wei Di Huang Wan is mainly used to treat symptoms caused by Kidney Yin deficiency, such as dry mouth, irritability, excessive thirst, soreness and pain in the lower back and knees, bone-steaming sensation, and tidal fever.

Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) is a commonly kept herbal formula in many households and offers significant health benefits. It can enhance immune function and help lower blood lipid and glucose levels. Many people take Liu Wei Di Huang Wan specifically to support kidney health, alleviating symptoms associated with kidney deficiency. As we know, kidney deficiency is clinically categorized into two main patterns: kidney yin deficiency and kidney yang deficiency. So, can individuals with kidney yang deficiency take Liu Wei Di Huang Wan?

Can Individuals with Yang Deficiency Take Liu Wei Di Huang Wan?

Generally, Liu Wei Di Huang Wan is not recommended for patients with yang deficiency. This is because the formula primarily nourishes yin and is classified as a classic yin-nourishing prescription—commonly described as “three tonifying and three draining” herbs. It helps regulate the liver, spleen, and kidneys, particularly excelling at nourishing kidney yin. Clinically, Liu Wei Di Huang Wan is mainly used to treat symptoms arising from kidney yin deficiency, such as dry mouth, irritability, excessive thirst, soreness and weakness in the lower back and knees, bone-steaming sensation, and tidal fever.

In contrast, the primary manifestations of yang deficiency include aversion to cold—the hallmark symptom—and a tendency toward warmth-seeking behavior. Other common signs are low energy, lethargy, and a general disinclination toward physical activity.

Patients with yang deficiency should focus on warming and tonifying yang. Formulas such as You Gui Wan (Right-Returning Pill) or Jin Kui Shen Qi Wan (Jin Kui Kidney Qi Pill) are more appropriate and effective choices. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, yin and yang mutually generate and support each other; thus, nourishing yin may indirectly benefit yang. However, Liu Wei Di Huang Wan is typically not prescribed alone to supplement yang qi but rather combined with other herbs in a customized formula. Herbal prescriptions must always be formulated by qualified TCM practitioners based on individual pattern differentiation (zheng diagnosis).
