Can watermelon be eaten in the evening?
Watermelon is generally safe to eat in the evening, but only in small quantities—not in excess—and should be avoided close to bedtime.
Watermelon contains a high water content, making it especially beneficial during summer for replenishing the body’s fluid requirements. Its diuretic effect helps eliminate excess heat from the body, promoting a sense of comfort and coolness while also helping prevent heatstroke. However, when consumed in the evening, intake should remain moderate. Excessive consumption may increase nocturnal urination, thereby disrupting sleep quality. Moreover, watermelon is considered a “cold”-natured food in traditional Chinese medicine; prolonged or excessive intake may adversely affect health and potentially cause gastrointestinal discomfort such as abdominal distension or diarrhea. Additionally, gastrointestinal motility naturally slows during sleep; eating watermelon right before bed may thus trigger gastric discomfort—including bloating or stomach pain. Furthermore, due to its relatively high sugar content, consuming large amounts of watermelon before bed—especially without subsequent physical activity—may contribute to weight gain.
It is recommended to consume watermelon earlier in the evening and in limited amounts to minimize potential adverse effects and avoid discomfort.
