Introduction
Excessive consumption of lotus root starch may lead to weight gain and increased gastrointestinal burden. Individuals with allergic constitutions may experience allergic reactions after consuming lotus root starch—particularly if they are sensitive to additives or lotus seeds contained therein. Moreover, if the water where lotus roots are cultivated is heavily contaminated with heavy metals, the resulting lotus root starch may contain excessive levels of heavy metals; ingestion could potentially cause heavy metal poisoning.

Ou Fen (lotus root starch) is not a pharmaceutical product and generally does not cause adverse effects. However, excessive consumption may lead to obesity, increased gastrointestinal burden, allergic reactions, or heavy metal poisoning.

1. Obesity

Ou Fen is a starchy food rich in calories and sugars. Excessive intake may cause rapid spikes in blood glucose levels, leading to conversion and accumulation of excess glucose as fat in the body, thereby contributing to weight gain and obesity.

2. Increased Gastrointestinal Burden

Ou Fen contains substantial amounts of plant protein, vitamins, carbohydrates, and dietary fiber. Overconsumption may overload the gastrointestinal tract, commonly resulting in symptoms such as increased flatulence and abdominal distension.

3. Allergic Reactions

Individuals with allergic constitutions may react to additives or lotus seed components present in Ou Fen. Consumption may trigger allergic responses, including generalized pruritus, diarrhea, or skin rashes.

4. Heavy Metal Poisoning

If the water bodies where lotus roots are cultivated are significantly contaminated with heavy metals, Ou Fen produced from such lotus roots may contain excessive levels of heavy metals—such as lead and cadmium. Regular consumption of such contaminated Ou Fen may pose a risk of heavy metal poisoning.
