Why do I get headaches as soon as I turn on the air conditioner?

Introduction
Headaches triggered by air conditioning use are often due to poor indoor air circulation. Running an air conditioner typically requires keeping doors and windows tightly closed, which can lead to insufficient oxygen levels—resulting in cerebral hypoxia and ischemia. Additionally, excessively low temperatures cause systemic vasoconstriction; when blood vessels constrict, cerebral blood flow decreases, thereby inducing headaches upon exposure to air-conditioned air. In patients with cervical spondylosis, cold air may stimulate superficial soft tissues of the head and neck, triggering muscle spasm and reducing vertebral artery blood supply—leading to similar headache symptoms.

Headaches that occur immediately after turning on the air conditioning may be caused by poor air circulation or blood vessel constriction, among other reasons. Additionally, such symptoms may also appear in individuals with cervical spondylosis.

1. Poor Air Circulation

Most people keep doors and windows tightly closed when using air conditioning, leading to poor indoor ventilation. This can result in insufficient oxygen levels, causing cerebral ischemia and hypoxia, which may trigger headaches, a feeling of head heaviness, and even nausea and vomiting.

2. Blood Vessel Constriction

If the temperature is too low, it may cause systemic blood vessels to constrict. When blood vessels narrow, blood flow to the brain may become inadequate, resulting in headaches upon exposure to air conditioning.

3. Cervical Spondylosis

In individuals with cervical spondylosis, neck muscles are often chronically fatigued and injured. Exposure to cold air may induce spasms in the superficial soft tissues of the head, leading to insufficient blood supply from the vertebral artery and triggering such headaches.

It is recommended that patients experiencing these symptoms seek timely medical evaluation at a hospital for further examination and receive appropriate treatment based on diagnostic results.
