What are the consequences of hitting your head and getting a bump from a fall?
A bump on the head after a fall may result in scalp hematoma, or it could lead to concussion or intracranial injury.
1. Scalp Hematoma
After a fall causing a bump on the head, a scalp hematoma may develop, often accompanied by abnormal symptoms such as redness, warmth, swelling, and pain. This condition usually resolves spontaneously and does not significantly affect health.
2. Concussion
If, following a fall with a head bump, the patient experiences transient loss of consciousness, retrograde amnesia, or symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and headache, it may indicate a concussion. Neurological examinations typically show no positive signs, and most cases recover spontaneously.
3. Intracranial Injury
If the above symptoms are accompanied by severe dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or even disturbances in consciousness, an intracranial injury may be present. Positive findings can usually be confirmed via cranial CT scan. In such cases, symptomatic treatment under medical guidance is generally required to prevent significant harm to health.
