Does Lianhua Qingwen treat influenza A?
Lianhua Qingwen has certain therapeutic effects on wind-heat type colds caused by influenza A. Lianhua Qingwen is a traditional Chinese patent medicine, with main ingredients including Forsythia suspensa, Lonicera japonica, processed Ephedra, and others. It is primarily used to treat influenza belonging to the pattern of heat-toxin attacking the lungs in traditional Chinese medicine, such as fever or high fever, chills, muscle aches, yellow or greasy tongue coating. Therefore, it is not suitable for patients with wind-cold type colds.
Influenza A virus is a type of influenza virus that can infect various mammals, including wild birds, domestic poultry, pigs, horses, and humans, causing influenza outbreaks. The virus can sometimes transmit from wild waterfowl to domestic poultry and may lead to human influenza pandemics. Human influenza typically causes symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, muscle pain, and conjunctivitis; severe cases may develop respiratory problems and pneumonia that can be fatal. Influenza is generally associated with both wind-cold and wind-heat types of colds.
The Ministry of Health's issued "Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol for Influenza A (2009 Trial Version, Second Edition)" recommends traditional Chinese patent medicines such as Lianhua Qingwen capsules and Yinhuang preparations for the TCM pattern of heat-toxin attacking the lungs. However, Lianhua Qingwen capsules are not the only recommended medication. Moreover, since influenza A can cause either wind-cold or wind-heat type colds, and Lianhua Qingwen is unsuitable for wind-cold patterns, it should not be blindly used for treating influenza A.
