Why does my stomach hurt as soon as I drink plain boiled water?
Abdominal pain immediately after drinking plain water may be a normal physiological phenomenon, or it could be caused by underlying medical conditions.
1. Normal physiological phenomenon
Experiencing abdominal pain after drinking plain water may result from an increased speed of gastrointestinal motility triggered by drinking. This can cause gas in the intestines to move downward, leading to gastrointestinal spasms and resulting pain—a normal physiological response. Generally, no special treatment is required, as symptoms tend to resolve on their own.
2. Disease-related factors
If an individual already has an existing gastrointestinal disorder, drinking plain water might trigger abdominal pain. For example, in chronic gastritis, pain can occur following stimulation by certain substances, commonly felt in the upper abdomen. Thus, drinking plain water may induce abdominal discomfort. In such cases, under a doctor's guidance, medications that protect the mucosal lining may be used to relieve symptoms. Commonly prescribed medications include colloidal bismuth pectin capsules and potassium citrate bismuth tablets.
When abdominal pain occurs, identifying the underlying cause is essential. If a gastrointestinal disease is present, active treatment of the primary condition is necessary, along with dietary adjustments to prevent symptom worsening.
