Why do a newborn's legs tremble when they stretch?
Leg trembling when a newborn stretches may be caused by factors such as immature nervous system development, vitamin D deficiency, or brain injury.
1. Immature Nervous System Development
The nervous system of newborns is not yet fully developed. The cerebral cortex is generally immature as well, and the excitability of central nerve cells is relatively high. This makes the nervous system easily stimulated by external factors such as light or temperature, leading to neural excitation. Since a newborn's nerves cannot yet fully control muscles, leg trembling during leg stretching is commonly observed.
2. Vitamin D Deficiency
Under normal circumstances, newborns require vitamin D supplementation after birth to promote calcium absorption. If vitamin D is not adequately supplemented, deficiency may lead to hypocalcemia, which increases the excitability of leg muscles and results in leg trembling when stretching.
3. Brain Injury
If a newborn experiences compression in the birth canal, or suffers from oxygen deprivation or asphyxia during delivery, brain cells may become damaged. Such brain injuries can also cause leg trembling when the infant stretches their legs.
Leg trembling during stretching in newborns may also result from other underlying causes. It is recommended to seek timely medical evaluation to determine the exact cause and follow appropriate treatment as directed by a healthcare provider.
