How many bowel movements per day are normal for a newborn baby a few days old?
The normal number of daily bowel movements for a newborn baby during the first few days of life depends on the feeding method.
1. Breastfeeding
Since the components in breast milk are well-suited for digestion and absorption by newborns, and because breast milk contains a relatively high amount of water, constipation rarely occurs. As a result, bowel movements may be more frequent—typically around three to five times per day—with stool color usually being yellow or golden yellow.
2. Mixed feeding
If breast milk supply is insufficient to meet the newborn's needs, formula supplementation is often necessary. In such cases, as long as the color and consistency of the baby's stool are similar to those seen with exclusive breastfeeding, it is considered normal. Bowel movements typically occur about 3 to 4 times per day.
3. Formula feeding
For newborns fed exclusively with formula, bowel movements tend to be less frequent than in breastfed babies due to the presence of casein curds in formula. Normally, these infants have one to three bowel movements per day. The stool is usually yellow or light yellow and may have a coarser texture.
