What is exercise-related abdominal pain?
Exercise-related abdominal pain refers to abdominal discomfort that occurs during physical activity.
Abdominal pain may occur during exercise, especially if one drinks excessive amounts of water or eats a heavy meal beforehand. Additionally, skipping proper warm-up exercises before physical activity may lead to exercise-induced abdominal pain, particularly when the intensity is too high. This condition is commonly caused by spasms of the diaphragm or gastrointestinal tract during intense exercise. The abdominal pain is often severe and requires immediate cessation of activity. The pain is typically intermittent; in more severe cases, it may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Symptoms usually subside after adequate rest.
It is recommended to exercise within one's physical limits, avoid overly strenuous activities, and ensure sufficient rest to prevent excessive fatigue. Proper warm-up exercises should be performed before working out, and eating large meals or drinking excessive fluids immediately before exercise should be avoided.
