Why does my stomach hurt and get diarrhea whenever I eat spicy food?
Stomach pain and diarrhea after eating spicy food may be a normal physiological response, or it could be caused by underlying medical conditions.
1. Physiological Response
Spicy foods are inherently irritating, and the gastrointestinal tract is usually sensitive. Consuming spicy food may stimulate increased gastric acid secretion and accelerate gastrointestinal motility, leading to stomach pain and diarrhea. This is generally considered a normal physiological phenomenon that requires no excessive concern and typically resolves on its own.
2. Disease-related Factors
If a person has gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, enteritis, or gastroenteritis, digestive function may already be impaired. The mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract can become further irritated or damaged by spicy foods, potentially causing edema, congestion, or even erosion. This may result in abdominal pain and increased intestinal mucosal permeability, leading to diarrhea. Patients should avoid consuming spicy or irritating foods and seek appropriate treatment under medical guidance based on the underlying cause.
