Can being exposed to heat cause diarrhea?
Diarrhea may occur after heat exposure, primarily due to high temperatures affecting digestion. Prolonged fermentation of intestinal contents irritates the intestinal lining, leading to increased intestinal motility and resulting in diarrhea.
Heat exposure is often caused by excessively high ambient temperatures. Under such conditions, patients may experience reduced secretion of gastric juice and stomach acid, which decreases gastric digestive capacity. This leads to accumulation of undigested food residues in the intestines. Combined with decreased intestinal digestive secretions due to high temperature, intestinal contents are prone to fermentation, irritating the intestinal wall and causing osmotic diarrhea. Additionally, if heat exposure causes electrolyte imbalances and symptoms of heatstroke, diarrhea may also develop, possibly accompanied by dizziness, headache, fatigue, and other abnormal symptoms.
When diarrhea occurs due to hot weather, patients can usually take probiotics under a doctor's guidance to help regulate intestinal flora and improve symptoms. Commonly used medications include compound *Lactobacillus acidophilus* tablets and *Bacillus subtilis* bifidus live bacterial granules.
