What causes the numbness sensation in the stomach?
There are many possible causes of a numb sensation in the stomach, including improper diet, indigestion, gastrointestinal dysfunction, gastritis, and gastric ulcers.
1. Improper Diet
Regular consumption of spicy or irritating foods may increase the burden on the stomach, reduce digestive capacity, and lead to discomfort such as numbness and pain in the stomach. Symptoms usually resolve on their own after improving dietary habits, without requiring specific treatment.
2. Indigestion
A numb sensation in the stomach may be caused by indigestion, often due to overeating, which leads to food accumulation in the gastrointestinal tract that cannot be digested and absorbed promptly, resulting in gas production and indigestion. This may also be accompanied by symptoms such as early satiety, bloating, and loss of appetite. Prokinetic medications such as cisapride tablets, mosapride citrate dispersible tablets, or itopride hydrochloride tablets may be used under medical guidance to enhance intestinal motility and promote gastric emptying.
3. Gastrointestinal Dysfunction
Irregular eating patterns or excessive mental stress may cause gastrointestinal dysfunction, leading to increased gastric juice secretion, irritation of the gastric mucosa, and symptoms such as numbness, pain, and vomiting in the stomach. Medications such as trimebutine maleate tablets, pepsin tablets, or lactasin tablets may be used under a doctor's supervision to regulate gastrointestinal function.
4. Gastritis
Gastritis may result from infection with *Helicobacter pylori*, causing damage to the gastrointestinal mucosa. Gastric acid secretion is typically increased, and digestion and absorption of food may occur more rapidly. Stimulation of gastric smooth muscle contraction by gastric acid can cause gas to reflux upward, triggering diaphragmatic spasms and the aforementioned symptoms. Symptoms may include belching and bloating. Under medical guidance, medications such as hydrotalcite tablets, sucralfate dispersible tablets, or potassium bismuth citrate tablets may be used to reduce damage to the gastric mucosa.
5. Gastric Ulcer
Gastric ulcers may be caused by excessive smoking or alcohol consumption, high levels of stress, eating spicy or irritating foods, or drinking stimulating beverages such as strong tea or coffee. These factors can lead to excessive gastric acid secretion, damaging the gastric mucosa and causing congestion and edema, thereby affecting gastric nerve conduction and resulting in discomfort such as fullness and numbness in the stomach. Additional symptoms may include abdominal pain and decreased appetite. Under a doctor’s direction, medications such as omeprazole enteric-coated tablets, lansoprazole enteric-coated tablets, or rabeprazole sodium enteric-coated tablets may be used to suppress gastric acid secretion.
It is recommended to seek timely medical evaluation at a hospital, undergo relevant examinations, obtain an accurate diagnosis, and follow a physician's guidance for appropriate treatment. During treatment, maintain a light diet to avoid irritating the stomach and worsening the condition.
