What causes burping up acid?
Burping up acid may be caused by indigestion, or it could indicate medical conditions such as chronic gastritis or reflux esophagitis.
1. Indigestion
Burping up acid may result from eating too quickly or overeating, leading to an excessive accumulation of food in the stomach that cannot be properly digested and absorbed, thus causing indigestion. This may trigger excessive gastric acid secretion, resulting in the aforementioned symptoms. It may also be accompanied by belching, bloating, and reduced appetite.
2. Chronic Gastritis
Chronic gastritis may occur due to consuming unclean or spoiled food, or from viral infections affecting the intestines. Continuous inflammation irritating the gastrointestinal tract often causes patients to experience burping, which can also stimulate increased gastric acid secretion. Bloating may also be present.
3. Reflux Esophagitis
Reflux esophagitis can also lead to the above symptoms. It is usually caused by dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter or insufficient gastrointestinal motility, allowing contents from the stomach and duodenum to flow back into the esophagus and cause these symptoms. Chest pain may also occur simultaneously.
