Why does a one-month-old newborn cry when put down after falling asleep while being held?
A one-month-old newborn may sleep well when held but cries upon being laid down. This behavior is related to physiological factors, daily habits, and physical discomfort. Appropriate measures should be taken according to the specific cause to improve the newborn's sleep quality.
1. Physiological Factors
Newborns often lack a sense of security. Environmental stimuli such as being too cold or too hot, or feelings of hunger, can affect their sleep quality, leading to difficulty falling asleep, restless sleep, and frequent crying. It is recommended to feed on demand, typically every 2–3 hours, and to maintain appropriate indoor temperature and humidity. Clothing and swaddling blankets should not be too heavy.
2. Daily Habits
After birth, newborns are often held by parents or other family members while sleeping. Some caregivers even continuously rock the baby to sleep, which may lead to a habit of needing to be held in order to fall asleep. When placed down, the baby may become unsettled and cry easily. After the baby falls asleep, it is advisable to gently place them in bed. Pillows are not recommended for infants under three months old.
3. Physical Discomfort
Medical conditions such as indigestion or colds can cause physical discomfort in newborns, resulting in symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, coughing, and nasal congestion, all of which can disrupt sleep. Timely medical evaluation is recommended. Once the underlying cause is diagnosed, treatment should follow medical advice. As the condition improves, the infant's sleep quality will also gradually improve.
