There is a movable hard lump beside the chin.
A movable hard lump near the chin may be caused by swollen lymph nodes, or it could result from other conditions such as sebaceous cysts or thyroglossal duct cysts.
1. Swollen Lymph Nodes
Lymph nodes are present beneath the chin. When exposed to bacterial or viral infections, these nodes may become inflamed and reactively enlarge. As the enlarged lymph nodes are typically not adhered to surrounding tissues, the lump feels mobile upon touch. This presents as a movable hard mass under the chin, sometimes accompanied by pain. Patients should follow medical advice for anti-infective treatment, using medications such as levofloxacin tablets, amoxicillin capsules, cefixime dispersible tablets, or metronidazole tablets.
2. Sebaceous Cyst
Sebaceous glands are distributed under the chin. Prolonged use of cosmetics or bacterial infection may lead to overactive sebum production and blockage of glandular openings, causing sebum to accumulate and form a cystic mass. Since the cyst is usually not attached to surrounding tissues, it can move freely, appearing as a movable hard lump under the chin. In such cases, patients may undergo complete surgical removal of the sebaceous cyst under medical guidance to reduce the risk of recurrence.
3. Thyroglossal Duct Cyst
This condition occurs when the thyroglossal duct fails to regress properly during development, leading to residual tissue forming a cyst. These cysts commonly appear along the midline of the neck and may manifest as a movable hard lump beneath the chin, typically with well-defined borders. If the cyst becomes infected or ruptures, pain may occur. Prompt surgical excision is recommended in such cases.
Patients are advised to maintain a light diet, avoiding greasy and spicy foods, and to consume more fresh vegetables and fruits. Adequate rest, avoidance of staying up late, stress reduction, and regular physical exercise—such as jogging or playing table tennis—are also recommended to support overall health.
