Does running affect height?
Whether running affects height generally depends on specific circumstances.
1. Yes
In adolescents whose bodies are still growing and developing, the epiphyseal plates (growth plates) between the long bones have not yet fully ossified. Running can accelerate metabolism and stimulate the secretion of hormones that promote growth and development, thereby encouraging bone growth. Additionally, long-term running may promote the proliferation and ossification of epiphyseal cartilage, leading to increased height. Therefore, running can positively influence height and support growth. However, high-intensity running, excessively long running durations, or incorrect running posture may easily compress or wear out joints, potentially causing osteoporosis or malnutrition, which could negatively affect height and hinder growth.
2. No
In adults whose epiphyseal plates have already fully ossified and growth plates closed, running typically does not stimulate further bone growth and therefore will not affect height.
It is recommended to engage in moderate running to avoid physical injury, regularly monitor height development, and consume plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to support healthy growth.
