Are phagocytes a type of immune cell?
Phagocytes are a type of immune cell; all cells involved in or associated with immune responses are collectively known as immune cells.
Phagocytes are white blood cells, also called macrophages. They are formed when monocytes in the bloodstream migrate out through blood vessel walls and enter tissues, where they transform into phagocytes. Phagocytes are very important immune cells derived from monocytes. Monocytes and macrophages together are referred to as phagocytes. The primary function of phagocytes is to initiate immune responses and produce immunological reactions. They participate in both non-specific and specific immunity, and also activate other immune cells so that the body can respond effectively to pathogens. The non-specific immune function refers to the ability of phagocytes to engulf senescent blood cell fragments and various pathogenic microorganisms invading the body, thus providing non-specific immunity.
Phagocytes can ingest foreign bacteria and viruses. Maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet, consuming more fresh vegetables and fruits, and supplementing various vitamins help enhance resistance.
