Introduction
If you pinch your nose and blow too hard, the air may enter the middle ear through the Eustachian tube, potentially causing otitis media, or increased pressure in the eardrum may lead to tympanic membrane perforation; in such cases, the ears are usually harmed. However, if you gently pinch your nose and blow with moderate force, it can effectively improve Eustachian tube function and help resolve retracted eardrums, and generally will not cause harm to the ears.

Pinching the nose and blowing can potentially harm the ears, depending on the specific circumstances. It may cause damage, or it may not.

1. With potential harm

If excessive force is used when pinching the nose and blowing, the generated air pressure may enter the middle ear through the Eustachian tube, creating strong airflow that could lead to otitis media (middle ear infection). Additionally, frequently repeating this action may increase pressure within the eardrum, potentially causing eardrum perforation. Symptoms may include ear pain, tinnitus, ear fullness, and hearing loss. In such cases, pinching the nose and blowing usually causes harm to the ears.

2. Without harm

Under normal circumstances, gently pinching the nose and blowing with moderate force can be beneficial for improving Eustachian tube function. Moreover, for patients experiencing eardrum retraction, performing this maneuver under a doctor's guidance may help alleviate the retraction. In these situations, pinching the nose and blowing typically does not harm the ears and may even be helpful.
