Dry nose upon waking in the morning
There are several reasons for waking up with a dry nose in the morning, such as environmental air conditions, atrophic rhinitis, and empty nose syndrome.
1. Environmental Air Factors
If the surrounding air is excessively dry—for example, during autumn or winter—the air tends to have low humidity. Moisture in the nasal cavity can then be lost more quickly. Especially during sleep, individuals who primarily breathe through their nose are more likely to experience this phenomenon upon waking.
2. Atrophic Rhinitis
In patients with atrophic rhinitis, the nasal cavity becomes dry due to progressive atrophy of the mucosal glands, which reduces secretion production. This leads to nasal dryness, often accompanied by symptoms such as impaired sense of smell and foul-smelling breath.
3. Empty Nose Syndrome
This condition presents with nasal dryness and may also include symptoms like pain and difficulty breathing. It commonly occurs after extensive nasal surgery, resulting in an abnormally widened nasal cavity. The nasal mucosa may show varying degrees of atrophy, leading to increased airflow and significant discomfort.
Besides the above causes, excessive medication use or vitamin deficiencies may also contribute to this condition.
