Illustrated Guide to Using a Mercury Thermometer
Mercury thermometers can measure body surface temperature, typically taken from areas such as the armpit, rectum, or mouth. Most commonly, temperature is measured under the armpit. The method involves placing the mercury end of the thermometer into the armpit and holding it tightly. The specific steps are as follows:
1. First, shake the mercury thermometer so that the reading drops below 35°C.
2. Cleanse both hands and the skin under the armpit, ensuring the armpit area remains dry.
3. Place the mercury-filled end of the thermometer under the armpit and hold it in place for 5 to 10 minutes before removing.
4. Finally, remove the thermometer and read the temperature. To read the scale, orient the thermometer with the markings facing upward and the triangular edge facing toward you. Look for the white line of mercury; the number aligned with this line indicates the corresponding body temperature. Generally, a temperature above 37.2°C is considered indicative of fever.
