What causes white discharge at the corner of the eye?
White discharge from the corners of the eyes may be caused by non-disease factors or disease-related conditions, such as dry eye syndrome, keratitis, or conjunctivitis.
I. Non-disease Factors
This may result from frequent late nights or excessive eye strain, leading to accumulation of ocular metabolic byproducts that have not been cleared in time.
II. Disease Factors
1. Dry Eye Syndrome
This may be caused by picky eating habits resulting in insufficient vitamin A intake, prolonged reading or writing causing eye fatigue, or underlying conditions such as allergic conjunctivitis. These factors can damage the tear film and reduce tear secretion, leading to dry eye syndrome.
2. Keratitis
This may occur due to frequent eye rubbing, poor eye hygiene, infection by pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria or viruses, or corneal injury.
3. Conjunctivitis
This may result from allergic reactions triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or animal dander. It may also be caused by extended use of contact lenses or irritation from foreign substances like windblown sand or chemical agents.
In addition, blepharitis could also be a possible cause. Timely differential diagnosis is recommended.
