Can people with gallstones eat pomegranates?
Pomegranates can be consumed by individuals with gallstones, but only in moderation.
The gallbladder and bile ducts together constitute the biliary system, and the formation of stones within this system is known as gallstones (also called cholelithiasis). Gallstones refer to a condition where stones develop in the gallbladder or bile ducts. It is a common disorder of the digestive system. Pomegranates are relatively low in calories and rich in nutrients, containing abundant vitamin C, organic acids, carbohydrates, and minerals, while being low in fat and protein. They have benefits such as softening blood vessels and improving skin health.
The sugars and vitamins in pomegranates do not promote the growth or increase in number of gallstones, nor do they trigger inflammatory episodes related to gallstone disease. Therefore, consuming pomegranates does not pose a significant risk of acute attacks in patients with gallstones, and there are no clear contraindications—hence, gallstone patients may eat pomegranates.
However, pomegranates are considered a warming food with properties that warm the middle jiao, support yang energy, and dispel cold. Most patients with gallstones have a damp-heat constitution, and consuming pomegranates may exacerbate internal damp-heat, potentially leading to discomfort. Therefore, individuals with gallstones should try to limit their intake of pomegranates.
