Introduction
Heavy eyelids and a sensation of being unable to open the eyes may be caused by aging and fascial degeneration leading to ptosis, or by excessive eye strain. It could also result from decreased tear secretion or overly rapid evaporation causing dry eye syndrome. Additionally, frequent rubbing of the eyes with dirty hands or infections such as those caused by Staphylococcus aureus may lead to hordeolum, in which inflammation of the eyelid glands causes edema.

There are two main causes for heavy eyelids and the sensation of being unable to open the eyes: non-disease factors and disease-related factors. Common medical conditions include dry eye syndrome, hordeolum (stye), among others.

I. Non-disease Factors

This may be due to aging and weakening of the fascia causing drooping eyelids, or from frequent late nights, lack of sleep, and excessive eye strain.

II. Disease-related Factors

1. Dry Eye Syndrome

This may result from exposure to wind or sunlight, or prolonged screen time with blue light exposure, leading to eye fatigue, reduced tear secretion, and excessive tear evaporation. These changes cause dry eye syndrome, resulting in dryness and a foreign body sensation in the eyes.

2. Hordeolum (Stye)

This may occur due to frequently rubbing the eyes with dirty hands or infection with bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. Inflammation of the eyelid glands leads to swelling and edema.

In addition, conditions such as myasthenia gravis could also be potential causes. It is recommended to seek timely medical evaluation for accurate diagnosis.
