Introduction
After using ear drops for a week, the ear still feels blocked, which may be due to inappropriate medication, prolonged illness, or worsening condition. If caused by acute suppurative otitis media, follow your doctor's instructions to use trimethoprim tablets or amoxicillin capsules. If the blockage is due to earwax softened and swollen by the ear drops, use ear irrigation or a cerumen hook to remove it. If caused by a foreign body in the ear canal, follow medical advice to use tweezers or ear irrigation for removal.

After using ear drops for a week, the ear may still feel blocked due to reasons such as inappropriate medication, cerumen impaction, or failure to remove foreign bodies. Generally, a professional physician must first make a differential diagnosis before appropriate treatment can be administered to relieve symptoms.

1. Inappropriate Medication

If ear blockage is caused by conditions such as acute suppurative otitis media or fungal external otitis, blindly self-medicating may result in inappropriate treatment that fails to suppress pathogens or inflammation. This may lead to persistent symptoms or worsening of the inflammation, resulting in the aforementioned situation. Typically, treatment should be initiated only after the underlying cause has been clearly identified under medical guidance. For example, if the cause is acute suppurative otitis media, antibiotics such as trimethoprim tablets, amoxicillin capsules, or cefixime capsules may be prescribed to inhibit bacterial growth and improve symptoms.

2. Cerumen Impaction

Cerumen (earwax) may swell significantly after prolonged exposure to ear drops and become tightly adhered to the ear canal mucosa, preventing spontaneous expulsion, which can also cause blockage. In such cases, methods such as ear irrigation, cerumen hook removal, or external auditory canal lavage can be used to remove the cerumen and restore patency of the ear canal, thereby improving symptoms.

3. Foreign Body Not Removed

Ear drops are primarily effective against inflammation. If ear blockage is due to foreign bodies such as insects or peanuts entering the ear canal, simply using ear drops without removing the foreign object usually produces little improvement. Animal-type foreign bodies can typically be removed under medical supervision using forceps or ear irrigation. Irregularly shaped or spherical foreign bodies are generally removed by a physician using a cerumen hook.

In addition, non-otologic conditions such as hypertension may also contribute. It is recommended to seek medical evaluation to determine the exact cause and then strictly follow the treatment plan prescribed by a physician.
